Platelet Count
A platelet count is a routine laboratory test that measures the number of platelets, also known as thrombocytes, circulating in the blood. Platelets are small blood cell fragments produced in the bone marrow that play a vital role in normal blood clotting, helping to prevent excessive bleeding following injury.
Platelet count forms part of the complete blood count (CBC) or full blood count (FBC) and is one of the most frequently requested laboratory investigations in clinical practice. High Platelet Count (Thrombocytosis)
An elevated platelet count, known as thrombocytosis, may occur as a reactive response to inflammation, infection, iron deficiency, recent surgery, or malignancy. Less commonly, it results from primary bone marrow disorders such as essential thrombocythaemia.
Although many patients remain asymptomatic, marked thrombocytosis may increase the risk of thrombotic events or, in some circumstances, bleeding complications.
Platelet Count in Clinical Assessment
Platelet count is interpreted alongside other clinical findings and laboratory investigations, including:
- Haemoglobin
- White blood cell count
- Coagulation studies
