BMI-based equations can estimate average body fat percentage but are not substitutes for direct body-composition assessment.

Overview

This calculator uses the adult Deurenberg equation, combining BMI, age and sex to estimate body fat percentage.

Clinical Significance

Body fat percentage may add context to BMI, but prediction error for an individual can be substantial and varies with ethnicity, age, training status and body composition.

When to Use

  • Use only as a broad adult estimate.
  • Do not use for children or pregnancy.
  • Use validated direct methods where accurate body composition is clinically important.

How It Is Calculated

  • Adult equation: body fat % = 1.20 × BMI + 0.23 × age − 10.8 × sex − 5.4, where male = 1 and female = 0.
  • BMI is calculated from height and weight before applying the age- and sex-adjusted equation.

Interpretation

  • The result is a population-derived estimate.
  • Do not apply a universal diagnostic threshold without appropriate guidance.
  • Consider direct measurement and the wider clinical context.

Worked Example

A 40-year-old female with BMI 25 has an estimated body fat percentage of 33.8%.

Patient Considerations

  • Athletic build, sarcopenia, ethnicity, age extremes and altered hydration can affect accuracy.

Limitations

  • The equation has meaningful individual prediction error.
  • It does not measure visceral fat distribution.
  • It was developed for adults and uses binary sex coding.

Clinical Pearls

  • Present the result as estimated rather than measured.
  • Use waist measures for central adiposity where appropriate.
  • Use DXA or another validated method when precision matters.
